Chargers Off Season Recap

June 27, 2010

So you’ve been away from the NFL for a while enjoying your productive Sundays. These next few weeks are typically the most quiet around the league as the NFL takes some time off. If you stay up on your Chargers football you know all of this already, but if you have been completely out of it  and now you’re looking for a primer on what’s been going on here it is:

HOLD OUTS

Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeil look to be sitting out most, if not all of the season because they’re unhappy about not getting long term deals and being restricted free agents. This will prove to be the ugliest off-season for the Chargers in quite some time. Everyone is going to lose on this deal, but they will lose the most because they’ve let their $3.5 million deals on the table. Yes they’ll both sign long term deals eventually, either with the Chargers or somewhere else, but with a lock-out looming on the horizon they might want to hold off on getting that extra Bentley.

Shawne Merriman has also chosen to sit out the off-season and has not signed his tender, but he will. He’s got a lot to prove this year and is expected to be in camp. Malcolm Floyd signed his one year tender after initially sitting out of pre-season activities.

NO SAFETY FOR ELLISON

Former Trojan safety Kevin Ellison‘s career is over with the Chargers. He got popped with 100 vicadins, but more importantly the Chargers drafted Darrell Stuckey and there was no room for Ellison. Ellison subsequently signed with Seattle and failed his physical. If he can prove he was injured while a Charger they might be on the hook for his salary. Either way, not a good summer for KE, too bad  because it was nice to see a Charger safety lay some lumber out.

DRAFT PICKS SIGNED

Rookie running back Ryan Mathews remains unsigned. This is not a shock as his contract will get done when the higher picks are done with theirs. Draft picks that are signed include quarterback Jonathon Crompton, safety Darrell Stuckey and tight end Dedrick Epps. Crompton will make the team as the 3rd string guy. Stuckey will likely end up the starter at some point, but the future of Epps is unclear because of the post-draft signing of Randy McMichael.

DRAFT PICKS UNSIGNED

Remaining draft picks to sign, besides Ryan Mathews, include 3rd round pick, inside linebacker Donald Butler and  nose tackle Cam Thomas.

With all that is going on with Marcus McNeil and Vincent Jackson, I don’t think agents are looking forward to playing hardball with Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith, but Cam Thomas thought he might go as early as the second round and didn’t go until the fifth, which was a brilliant bit of “general managing” by Smith. If he’s looking for second round money he might be in for a wake-up call.

DRAFT RECAP – CHARGERS THINK MATHEWS IS THE REAL DEAL

If you really haven’t been paying attention then, backing up a little further, the Chargers fooled everyone again in the draft as they went with a running back in the first round despite speculation they would take a nose tackle to replace Jamal Williams. Ryan Mathews will be the player on which A.J. Smith‘s legacy will be judged, if you want to single one player out. No pressure.

The Chargers proved that patience is a virtue by getting a nose tackle they liked, Cam Thomas, in the 5th round. Some have said the Chargers overpaid for Mathews, giving up a lot of picks to move up in the draft, but if he comes anywhere near what they think he will, the term “overpaid” will be so completely irrelevant that those who suggested it will want to quietly slip away into obscurity. The Chargers like Mathews,  a lot. They like him “Tomlinson” a lot. And – could there be a possible way you could “overpay” for LT? There’s only one LT and it’s not fair to put that label on Mathews, but they really like him that much.

DAVIS STILL TRYING TO PROVE HE’S NO BUSTER

Buster Davis continues to remain a Charger, despite having almost zero playing time in the regular season. Davis was impressive in mini camp, until Eric Weddle gave him a concussion that is.  Injuries and inability to crack the special teams squad have really hampered his progress.

FREE AGENTS

As is typical for the Chargers, they have not made a lot of noise in the free agency market. They did pick up some veteran help however. The Chargers picked up veteran tight end Randy McMichael, adding depth behind Antonio Gates and Kris Wilson. This acquisition was mainly to address the loss of Brandon Manumaleuna who jumped ship for Chicago.

The Chargers also picked up veteran receiver Josh Reed who will challenge Buster Davis for playing time at the slot receiver position. Reed also seems like added insurance against Jackson holding out, but he’s not really a down the field guy.

Nathan Vasher and Donald Strickland were brought in to shore up secondary. With the lost of procreation expert Antonio Cromartie, Antoine Cason will move to starting corner opposite Jammer. Strickland and Vasher will compete for time in the nickel defense.

Even with Ellison being jettisoned, the Chargers secondary is getting pretty crowded. Steve Gregory has been too consistent to write off. Paul Oliver has developed and, like Gregory,  can play at both cornerback and safety. Additionally, C.J. Spillman, the un-drafted free agent from a year ago has shown up on special teams and provided good physical play.

Left tackle Tra Thomas was added to the roster as insurance against Marcus McNeil taking a flyer on this season.

Kicker Nick Novack was also signed by the Chargers, but don’t look for him to occupy a roster spot at the beginning of the season unless there’s a complication with Kaeding.

EX-CHARGERS

The Chargers locker room is going to be quite different this year as they lost some staples of the roster. Contact shy cornerback Antonio Cromartie was traded to the Jets. The compensation could be as high as a second round pick, depending on his contract status and the success of the Jets.

Running back Ladanian Tomlinson will also join the Jets this year as he hopes to regain some of his former glory in a run happy offense.

Nose tackle Jamal Williams has moved on to Denver where he’ll look to bolster the middle of their 3-4 defense. Charlie Whitehurst has gone to Seattle with the Chargers receiving a coveted third round pick as compensation. Back up running back Michael Bennett was also not re-signed. San Diego favorite, and special teams stand out, Kassim Osgood has left the Chargers and will get his shot as a full time receiver in Jacksonville with the Jags.

As mentioned, mammoth tight end Brandon Manumaleuna parted ways with the Chargers in favor of Chicago and Kevin Ellison is currently in limbo.

POSITION BATTLES

Heading into the season there are several roster spots that have question marks next to them.

Wide ReceiversLegedu Naanee looks to take over the starting role from Vincent Jackson. Actually Floyd will move up and Nanee will take his spot. He proved last year to be more than capable at every receiver position. Davis will compete with Josh Reed and a talented group of rookies including Gary Banks for time.

Running Back - Rookie Ryan Mathews will take the bulk of the carries, sharing time with franchised back Darren Sproles. With Michael Bennett not returning, there would appear to be an opening for a rookie on the roster, but fullback Mike Tolbert could very well fill that role. Jacob Hester appears to be pretty solid in his role as a hybrid fullback. The Chargers will keep at least one rookie on the practice squad.

Tight End – The signing of Randy McMichael virtually assures that a rookie tight end will not make the regular season roster.

Linebacker – Most of the intrigue here will be with the inside linebacker slot. Brandon Siler has made a real case for himself to be the starting ILB ahead of Kevin Burnett who was injured much of last year. Once seen as a special teamer stand-out and goal line muscle, Siler showed he can make plays on any down last year. Burnett has a lot to prove and still carries a chip on his shoulder from his days in Dallas. Add the Chargers second pick in the draft, Donald Butler, and this will be one of the most competitive battles in camp.

In regards to the outside linebacker position there are a couple of wild cards. Shawne Merriman, should return to form after being farther removed from the injury that sidelined him two years ago. He’s also playing for a contract. Antwan Applewhite has been on the bubble, but may have supplanted the injury prone Jyles Tucker. Both players have tireless motors, but Applewhite has proven himself on the field more. Just the facts. Also Jim Holt could be transitioned into the OLB position from the inside.

Safety - Darrell Stuckey will look to work his way into the strong safety slot opposite Eric Weddle. He’ll have competition from C.J. Spillman who has worked well on special teams and Paul Oliver who has yet to gain a foothold on the game-day roster.  Steve Gregory is the same story every year. Every year he makes a case to make the team and each year he gets better. The Chargers have suffered average play from the safety position for years and this years competition should make the position the deepest since they parted ways with Rodney Harrison.

Offensive Line – The biggest question mark will be with left tackle. The starting job should be between veteran Tra Thomas and Brandyn Dombrowski, who filled in admirably for the injured Jeromy Clary last year at right tackle coming over from guard. Neither player is Marcus McNeil and time will only tell how long the Chargers want to play around with such a critical position. The rest of the offensive line seems pretty solid with starters. Second year player Louis Vasquez should be better, coming off a solid rookie campaign. Jeromy Clary was playing good football at right tackle before he went down with the season ending injury. Nick Hardwick will be back in control at center and Kris Dielman will return at left guard.

Defensive Line – Nose tackle will be the biggest question for the Chargers defensive line. Rookie Cam Thomas is the player most likely to become starter for the position. “Starter” will likely be a relative term as a rotation will likely be used. The bottom line is that Jamal Williams is not replaceable by one person, but with all of the injuries from last year there are a lot of guys with experience. Antonio Garay, Oge Nwagbuo, Travis Johnson, Alfonso Boone and Vaughn Martin will all compete for time at the nose tackle and end positions. Jacques Cesaire will likely start at defensive end with Louis Castillo, but there are bodies to move around.

Cornerback – Position battles will be most fierce for the nickel back position with Cason moving up to starting corner. This role is up for grabs and it will be a serious competition.

This ends the longest “short” version of the Chargers off season there may be. Time to buckle down as we head towards camp.

Boltaholic Briefing

January 6, 2010

Rivers has his eye on the Super Bowl (Via Chargers.com)

- San Diego Union Tribune’s Kevin Acee loudly refers to himself in the third person while re-calling his shot for Chargers/Vikings Super Bowl. He has his picks for the playoffs here.

- Up and coming linebacker James Holt, who was brought up this year to help plug the sieve or linebacker injuries, has been put on IR for a shoulder injury sustained against the Redskins. Chargers sign ex-Viking special teamer Dontarrious Thomas according to SDNN.com. To bad for Holt who had been working hard to crack a lineup spot, but the impact shouldn’t be too great.

- The Sports Network has a pretty good recap of the AFC West this year. They lead off with detailing the woes in Bronco land.  When you look at the Broncos and the Chargers, it’s really a story of reversal of fortune this year.

Had the Broncos not started out 6 – 0 their final record of 8 – 8 wouldn’t have looked like such a glaring failure. In fact, with probably nobody expecting Orton to play as well as he did, it looked like Cutler was mainly shipped off for the picks, which they’ll still get.

In that scenario, this Boltaholic thought they would be rebuilding for a few years. Conversely if the Chargers had a stronger start to the season, they would have likely been the talk of the NFL all year. As it was the all-knowing analysts wrote them off after the 2 -3 start and have been trying to make up for it in the last few weeks to not look like total fools for, all but ignoring them, even after they had put together the sixth win in a row. Too late.

- Sorry to digress… Chargers.com has a story of Turner crediting his players. Really the story is about him. It’s a good piece on the road to the playoffs.

Saturday Boltaholic Briefing

December 19, 2009

The news about troubled receiver Chris Henry has certainly dominated the news. I’m over it, so we’ll focus on the game in today’s briefing. I’d just say condolences to his friends and family. I don’t know what kind of demons he was fighting, but he was clearly running the sprint, not the marathon.

Anyway one to the briefing…

- SI has a story on the game. Rivers talks about a challenging Bengal defense, Vince Jack is on the verge of joining Gates at the 1,000 yard mark.

- Jon Runyan is running for office. We all knew that, but he’s kicking it up a gear. Apparently he’s got the Charger playbook all figured out, so he can concentrate on what’s really important to him.

- The New York Times takes notice of the Chargers receiving corps.

- Bengals.com with the game preview.

- North County Times talks about the importance of fill-ins to this years team.

- SDUT highlights the Bengal corners in a preview of key match-up.

- Bolts from the Blue with the  injuries.

Tuesday Boltaholic Charger Briefing

December 15, 2009

Here’s what “they” are saying about the Chargers on a Tuesday…

-Bill Williamson, who has been doing a nice job covering the Chargers for the ESPN blog correctly points out that the Chargers are making “big plays at the right times…”

- Dallas/Fort Worth writer Tim MacMahon grades the Dallas effort against the Chargers. No real surprises, but this Boltaholic gets a kick out of things like this…

- NC Times focuses on the Chargers focus. Has there ever been a team that’s said, you know – we could care less about the next two games – we’re focusing on the playoffs. Actually the Colts and Saints could pretty much make that claim, but they won’t.

- Cincinnati.com has good bits about the Bengals leading up to this weekends match-up. Anyone remember nice-guy Larry Johnson? He’s baaack… Let’s see if he can keep the “f” bombs to a minimum.

- Kevin Acee is reporting that Turner will get an extension after the season. Guess there is something about winning when it counts that makes you a, dare I say, good coach. Sorry Turner haters, deal with it.

That’s the briefing for a Tuesday…

Monday Boltaholic Briefing (better late than never)

December 14, 2009

The evening version of the Boltaholic Briefing comes a day after the Chargers asserted their dominance over the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have their share of gamers, but their clearly struggling through some issues this year. Playing the Chargers, whose offense is red hot was not the tonic that Dallas needed to cure their December blues.

Here’s some of the post coverage…

- Chargers.com has the game breakdown, nothing but the facts ma’am. Other post game coverage here

- USA Today reports on Chargers powerful run stopping linebacker Tim Dobbins who says he knew exactly what the Cowboys were going to run on the Chargers momentum changing goal-line stand. How cool was Dobbins doing the hair tackle on Barber on the final 4th down attempt. Looked like he was trying to stop a stage coach.

- The Fort Worth Star Telegram puts the spotlight on LT after the game. You’d expect some love for a local product who played college ball in the Lone Star State.

- Dallas News  had a story of the Chargers one-two combo on special teams. What they were talking about was Scifres kicking and Osgood downing the ball. A story could also be written about the Charger Special Teams called Jekyll and Hyde – Feast or Famine… The Chargers had their problems early with special teams, as they’ve had in many games this year. Credit the players for correcting early problems.

As an aside… How upset was Scifres that nobody downed his punt early in the game? Eesch. The CBS censor machine was a little faulty because I could clearly read his lips when he said, “What the Fudge.”

Norv was also cussing up a storm on the sidelines which is always entertaining. He screams and yells every line from the Sailor’s handbook and then cracks a smile. He grows on you doesn’t he?

- Sporting News had a nice Q & A session with Rivers. That or they just recorded the press conference. I haven’t looked at the video yet .

- The players are showing Norv some love. Good, he deserves it. There’s nothing more tiresome, to this Boltaholic, than the constant whining about the coach. When it was Marty, you heard Marty ball. When it’s Norv, even though he’s had the best playoff success since Bobby Ross, it doesn’t matter worth a hill of beans. The Chargers have won 8 in a row and if, knock on wood, the Chargers should drop a game it will be “here we go again, Turner sucks.” Is there a coach in the NFL that inspires such instant negativity as Norv?

Friday Boltaholic Briefing

December 11, 2009

The countdown has begun…

- There’s been some talk about Merriman bent about the Cowboys because they selected Demarcus Ware ahead of him. True or not, that’s a stretch in terms of story lines, although inside linebacker Kevin Burnett seems a little bitter.

- SDUT has a story about the new stadium. I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the whole thing, but I’m pretty sure it went like this: blah blah blah, economy, blah blah blah, community patnership, blah blah blah, putting forth our best effort, blah blah blah BLH.

- SI.com points out that the Raiders and Cowboys suck in December. Ground breaking, although the Raiders have also sucked in November, October and September in the last few years.

On the Raiders, now that they’ve rightly benched that over-sized bed wetter Russell, they’re playing more to their potential. Gradkowski may not be the next Rich Gannon, but at least he doesn’t demoralize the team by handing the game to opponents week in and week out.

The Raiders can make a statement by winning some games down the stretch, especially by beating the Broncos and avenging an earlier embarrassment. They’ve beaten some good teams this year. As strange as it sounds their match up against the Browns should be interesting in that both teams should be on the upswing in 2010.

- SD BoltReport takes a look at Sunday’s match-up.

- The Washington Times looks at the Chargers Bolting to the Top.

Thursday Boltaholic Briefing

December 10, 2009

On the third day Boltaholic Briefing rested, so here’s the report on Thursday.

Leading into what was probably the most anticipated game of the season, Bolts vs Cowboys, there are a lot of story lines. This Boltaholic  in particular wants to know what Vegas is laying on Charger punter Mike Scifres hitting the $20 million TV set looming over the field in Dallas.

I’d also like to know if anyone from the Dallas AV squad has been fired yet for plugging Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 into that behemoth.

Anyway, on to today’s news…

  • An unlikely entrant into the Boltaholic Briefing, the Wall Street Journal compares this years Chargers to last years Cardinals….Personally I think it’s a reach, because in this fans totally unbiased opinion, when the Chargers go to the Super Bowl, they win…
  • Awful news as the Chargers send another nose tackle to the IR, UUUUHH!
  • A sincere congratulations to former Charger stating safety Clinton Hart who got picked up by the Rams. Hopefully he doesn’t let this opportunity pass him by…
  • The Bleacher Report which normally has decent stories, throws  up a big fat air-ball in this story that suggests LT’s career will be based on what he does in the sunset of his career posing the ridiculous, “I understand numbers and records are great and all Tomlinson wants to do is win a Super Bowl. However, the matter of the fact is, if Tomlinson doesn’t produce in big games with two years left on his contract, then LT won’t have the chance to win a Super Bowl with the Chargers as it will be bonvoyage to what was almost a great career in San Diego.” What an utterly ridiculous take.
  • The Victoria Advocate has a story about Wade Phillips’ situation in Dallas. SDSU has an article about the Chargers love fest for Phillips. – I’m not bitter about Phillips or offensive coordinator Cam Cameron jumping ship after the 14-2 season. I realize it’s the nature of the game. It obviously worked for Phillips, whether he makes it another season or not. For former Dolphin head coach Cameron? Not so much. If you think about it though, if Cam Cameron had not been so bad as head coach in Miami, we might not have seen the whole house of cards fall down that led to Parcells, Sparano and ultimately the Wild Cat. So Cam Cameron did make an impact as head coach after all. Ok, looks like I’m still bitter… Sorry about that CC.
  • SDBoltReport.com talks about the importance of youth in an injury riddled line-up.
  • Chargers.com offers a cliche or two in what is a good breakdown of where the team is heading into Dallas. The Chargers are fortunate to have Casey Pearce on the squad. He’s a good writer and one of the reasons I think their website is one of the best in pro sports. I’m not saying that because I’m a Charger fan either, I’d have no problem calling them out if I thought otherwise. Way to give it a 110% Casey…
